  • Tonight I had a drink with a friend at a place that has become a regular spot for us. We used to meet at a pizza place between where we lived, but then she moved across town. Now we still meet in the middle, but the middle is somewhere new. We were talking about our respective lives and upcoming big decisions. Brainstorming and questioning and proposing and suggesting. Maybe we get nowhere but at least we get it out there. And that, I think, is how we will get places.

We don't get to see each other very often, so we squeeze too much into too little time. We both get passionate and excited, and are easily wrapped up in the subjects we tackle. To the point that when it is finally time to go, there is no real end or resolution, no unwinding or conclusion. Content in the small advancements we made, but for the rest, not wanting to 'leave it for tomorrow.'

Tonight she left her boyfriend waiting, "probably hungry and anxious," she says. I feel a little selfish, but I can't deny I'd have sat for another hour and told him: "Hey man, tonight you can eat alone."
