  • He comes each Sunday to the Brighton Beach Boardwalk near Coney Island and sits on a bench with his dog Captain. He's Russian and his English is almost non-existent, but he understands "you have a beautiful dog" and "may I take your picture?" He told me:

"Captain.. he likes the sitting on the boardwalk. He is friendly dog, but people ... they afraid of him. He looks mean, just like me, but he is dog with big heart, also just like me."

This man and his dog have become a fixture on the boardwalk, which is why I refer to him as the "mayor." I travel again and again to the Brighton Beach Boardwalk, and always make my visits on Sunday so that I can see the Mayor and Captain. They have become old friends.
