    I am knitting an ugly scarf.

    It's ugly because I am really rusty and haven't done any knitting in years. I don't know what possessed me to buy the yarn, a soft gray and a fire engine red, and begin to knit this scarf thing, but the clicking of the needles is making me happy. Casting on and casting off. Knitting is a cozy thing to do.

    My scarf will grow longer and longer as the days grow shorter. Perhaps the act of knitting is more important than the final result? I believe this is so. When I run out of yarn, I will wear my ugly scarf with pride.
