  • I still remember
    First day of school
Second grade is scary when you don’t know a soul

You sat alone at lunch, too
And at recess I knew we would be friends

    Two odd ducks
    Lone soldiers
    United in a new solidarity

    I didn’t notice
    Or maybe I didn’t care
    That your clothes were dirty
Your hair was a little goofy
You wore the same sweatshirt everyday

    So what

Then one day the pretty girls came
To us as we played by the hill at recess
The girls with the braids and the smiles and the pretty dresses

    ‘Run’ they told me
‘You don’t want to be her friend’
‘Don’t be weird be our friend instead’

    I ran with them
    I ran away

I still remember your cries as you tried to catch up
And their shrill laughter as they
desperately tried to get away from you
As we tried to get away from you

    We never spoke again
And I’ll never forget your face
