  • She stared at her phone buzzing on the nightstand before finally answering it.

    “Cath…” he said, his voice trailing off. “About today-”

    She interrupted him, “Tell me why.”

    “I’ll try anything once,” he said sullenly. “Baby we’ll be fine.”

    “I’m not your toy.”

    “Something good can work,” he said, his voice feigning optimism.

    “Believe in what you want.” She hung up and threw her phone on the floor. She pressed her eyes shut. “Don’t let it bring you down,” she whispered to herself.
