  • My youngest sister was the smart one. Of the five of us kids - she was the one who would be called up to the North East to attend a proper college. She did. My mom saw to it. To add to the drama she went off to Cornell, where my mother had graduated decades before. Four years elapsed and it was time for graduation. All seven us would be there together staying on Cayuga Lake, rambling around Ithaca and visiting our family farm in Greene.

I took my Polaroid Land Camera along to capture the scenery - and this moment happened somewhere on the side of a two lane highway. I looked over while waiting at a stop light and there was this amazing fellow - tuning his boom box. The exposure was clean enough to reveal the detail on his shirt which had an Army Airborne logo on it and the words 'Spring Break'. He was a Veteran. Thirty years earlier my mom was up the road studying humanities.

    He was in Vietnam.
