  • I was vain
    when I was younger
    I was admired
    for my appearance
    and I liked it

    I used to pretend
    disdain for
    the attention
    men paid to me
    now and then
    I still miss when
    I used to be
    a beauty or
    the queen in
    a sailor's dream

    Now I am
    the rose petals
    pressed between
    open pages of
    a favorite passage
    in a book of verse

    I may still be beautiful
    to little children
    and old people
    and dogs, even
    to the thoughtful few
    the people who
    take the time to look
    deep into your eyes

    And I like it
