  • Startled by the deafening squalking of birds
    That fall into the generic category of blackbirds,
    I ran outside to see a flock stretching
    for what seemed to be at least a mile
    across the sky of blue.

    And as I marveled at this sight
    Hundreds landed upon the autumn branches,
    to feed a bit,

    Suddnely a BANG from a neighbor's shotgun
    and with a
    of fluttering wings
    They were gone.

    A bittersweet reminder
