  • Though I'm pretty apathetic about religion these days, I had few qualms about taking a partial responsibility for this child as her Godmother. Layka Mary is my fourth cousin, the Mary in her name is for my mother who died a month before she was born, and for my Great Aunt who's her Great Grandmother.

In my family, Godmothers are not so much a religious guide (though I am certainly very educated about religion, atheism and agnosticism) but also to be an unofficial extra guardian to that child's well-being. My own Godmother and Godfather are still very close in my life. They come and do my garden, we stay in very regular contact and they have always been there for me to give me help or advice. My Godmother told me to be sure that I would always be there for this child before I took on the role for her. It wasn't hard though. She's like me in many ways. Stubborn, independent, mischievous and curious. She's also kind of adorable.

And, like I do for all the kids in my family, I have a lot of love for her.
