  • The flood debris -- mounds of toppled trees and crunchy brush -- had hidden the trail. I could have turned back, I guess, but instead I wandered north along the rocky bed of the mostly dry Knife River.

    Eventually I found this serene spot, with a view you'd never experience from the trail. There's a lesson in that.
