  • I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world to be feeling a sense of impending - well, not exactly doom, but at the very least, severe straitening of circumstances.

It is with this in mind that I have been preparing, over the last few years, for a way of life which depends less and less on governments and corporations and services. I don't trust them not to disappear overnight. I don't believe they know what they're doing, nor do I think they have my interests at heart.

I've been learning about foraging and the beneficial properties of wild plants. I've been trying to learn how to grow things, to make things and to manage with less.

I haven't given up on civilisation and retreated into the woods just yet, but I'm prepared to do so at a moment's notice. I've got the woodburning cooker and next, I'm ordering the solar panel with battery pack.

The only thing about my present life I'll really, really miss, if it comes to it, is BBC radio.
