  • "Won't you come and take me home?
I've been too long at the fair.
And Lord, I can't stand it anymore."
    -- Bonnie Raitt

In my literal life, I don't stay too long at the fair anymore. Places that collect and concentrate a lot of things to look at -- beautiful things -- overwhelm me after an hour or two. And I don't ask anyone to come get me; I take myself home. From the Common Ground fair this weekend, I rode my bike home with a backpack full of indigo and aquamarine yarn, some tasty maple sugar products, and some photographs. And admiration for the people who marched and danced in this parade celebrating rural life and local economies, and advocating change to organic practices.

That evening, my husband and I watched a film about the massive 1999 demonstration against the World Trade Organization in Seattle. We learned many things from the film and from the follow-up research we did about the demonstration. The protestors were brave, the WTO continues to be unimaginably powerful, and protests continue around the world against the people, policies and organizations that exploit human beings and natural resources. There seems to be no limit to human callousness and to human caring.

In my figurative life, when I fall, briefly, into despair, I would love for someone to come and take me home.
