  • Trains tap into some deep American collective memory.

    ― Dana Frank,

    Small town train station
    fat pigeons pecking peanuts
    homeless man asleep

    Sparrows swoop and roost
my whole life is here with me
    in two canvas bags

    Surfliner heads south
    following the blue coastline
    islands in the fog

    As a child, in June,
I put pennies on these tracks
    played dangerous games

    Eucalyptus, palms
white heron in a salt marsh
    reflections of clouds

    Rolling pacific waves
    caress the shore
    three dolphins surfing

    Young leaves bursting
    as though ready to tango
    with the blue spring wind

    Alongside the tracks,
    nasturtiums in the noon sun
    sweet smell of the sea
