I went looking for a pipe stem on the beach today.
    My gaze
down at the vast sea of sand,
instead of out at the waves,

because what I was looking for was camouflaged,
    small, hard to find,
    possibly unattainable, possibly insignificant

    At times I looked up,
because it was sad to look down for so long,
but then the sadness would subside and the desire to continue propelled by the desire for this possibly significant, possibly attainable object…

I kept looking down, intent on the sand instead of the sea.
And though at times it seemed sad, the way was good, and continues to be good.

And though at times I hoped never to find the object I was searching for, when I did find it, I saw it was significant, though small,
    it was fascinating, mysterious,
    it was good,
and I wondered if I might find one more.
