  • I recall

    The projects

    I held boards and chafed
    while you sawed
    realizing only later
there is no easy way to learn.
    I see now
the way you sharpened a knife
until it would shave your arm.

    The fishing trips

    Brilliant rainbow trout from
    mountain streams in Colorado
with saplings, a length of line and salmon eggs.
Bouncing lead sinkers off the rocky bottom
with deep sea gear and clams for bait.
    I see now
the way you stayed on board
scrubbing away blood and silver scales.

    Rabbit hunting

A raffled trip with a couple of pastors,
    their beagles and shotguns.
My fingers too numb to pull the trigger
    when mine hopped by
    Tough rabbit stroganoff
    The hunters’ reward
    I see now
    you watching me
letting me stand on my own

    When I look back
    I smile now
    and reach
    Father to son
    Father to father
    Man to man
    Across the years
