  • It’s your birthday tomorrow. You would have been thirty-eight. I always think of you in September because that’s when we met. I saw you across the bar, laughing, full of life. You bought me a beer and told me you had a birthday coming up. You were turning thirty-two.
    You called me the next day and we went to dinner. That was the beginning of my dreams.

    I dreamed we might get married.
    I dreamed we might have kids.
    I dreamed we might live together in a house. Something simple by the sea.
    I never dreamt I’d write your eulogy.

    It’s raining today and I can’t stop thinking of you. There is this poem…

    “He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
    Clean favored, and imperially slim.
    And he was always quietly arrayed,
    And he was always human when he talked;
    But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
    'Good-morning,' and he glittered when he walked.

    And he was rich - yes, richer than a king -
    And admirably schooled in every grace:
    In fine, we thought that he was everything
    To make us wish that we were in his place.

    So on we worked, and waited for the light,
    And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
    And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
    Went home and ____________________.”

    You know how it ends.

    I’m glad it’s raining today. Maybe then no one will notice my tears.
