  • We have been hit badly here in Ireland by the economic downturn. In a moment of madness the Government guaranteed "the bond holders" and now we are all struggling in the middle of a banking crisis - a crisis we had very little to do with.

    Oh, to have the simple times back!

    This photograph my grandfather took in Knocknagree, a small village in north Cork in the 1950s, captures the innocence of a golden age of banking. The sign in the background says it all.

    No need for an Occupy Movement here.

    Everyone looks very happy - look at the character at the door with his stick behind his back, with a pose like that, how could he have a care in the world? And as for the guy on the far right... what can I say?
