  • The morning of September 11th, 2001, I was working at a film studio located just off Tampa International Airport. At one point I could no longer stand to watch the television coverage – how many times can you see planes crashing into buildings before it sank in that there would never be a replay in which they missed? – so I stepped outside for some fresh air. And there I came upon an amazing sight. A continuous stream of commercial aircraft was landing at the airport. And from nearby MacDill Air Force Base, one fighter jet after another took to the air. It was as though someone had painted an enormous V in the sky. Victory? Over whom? Over what? We could most likely defeat whoever did this, but would we be able to master ourselves?

Stunned, I returned to the studio, knowing beyond question that things would be drastically different, perhaps for a long time, and not in a good way.
