  • I remember it too, from half a world away. It was late at night and I was the only one up having just finished watching an episode of West Wing. And it began. At first the confusion and then the gradual realisation of what was happenng. I woke my partner who was angry at first but later thanked me. We sat up all night watching from afar. Wondering if we should ring friends and wake them and tell them to watch or let them have one more night in a world where this didn’t happen.

I worked in a museum so the next morning they had it up on the big TV screens in the main hall, until children started arriving. It was moved to a private theatre for those who wanted to watch. Many found their way there and just sat and watched and cried. It was a large dark room so people had privacy in their grief. There were probably Americans there, on holiday, so far from home, watching in horror.

We went about our day and at times thought it strange that something like this could happen and yet we still go about our day. And then we started to hear the stories of bravery, of loss, of grief, of heroes. That is now what I remember most, the stories of the heroes, those that were already heroes, the police, the fire brigade, the paramedics, and the everyday people that became heroes, ordinary people who became extraordinary.
