  • Initially, I was going to tell the story of my magnificent garbage can. But that will come later.

Today, I will tell you how the trash is taken care of in a submarine while under the sea. As you would figure, the trash is collected up and taken to a central area on the "boat" (that is submariner-speak for the submarine).

This area is called the TDU space. It is a small, closet-like area that contains a specialized trash masher and a device called the Trash Disposal Unit. It is a vertical torpedo tube! The trash is shot right out of the bottom of the boat. Everyone, on the crew learns the basics of this system and how to work it.

I am limited for space right now, but if there is enough interest, I will continue in a followup piece.
