  • Once I lay on the sun-warmed planks of the dock
bare boy belly against the silver wood
watched the minnows dart and shift
    alert to my shadow hand
    flashing this way and that

On a wind worn, restless night came thoughts
    I let them slip nigh
    afraid to reach for one
    fearing it would slip past
spun away by the touch of my thought

    Just as lightning flashes
    just as a glance caresses
    there and then gone
    just as for a second
    i know you
    forever know you
    eye meets eye

I breathed in and forgot to let go
held as though by a web
    in storylines

    curtain swung back
    a shaft of light
    in a long empty room

    And no,
    no sense that I must
    reach out and comfort you
you don't need me for that
    nor require it

    Any comfort I might offer
would be for entirely different reasons
    and in another fashion

    No, this is

As I did when you danced
    arms upraised
    on the rough dance floor

    an ancient goddess
