  • While waiting for my Western blot to develop.

    What's that you might ask?

A piece of paper, white and clean.

Flattened next a gel rich in protein

Fried with a current, many volts

    Affixing those same proteins

    Invisibly, stealthily,

    Until washed in antibodies

    Not one, but two

    Washed and soaked

    In 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine

    Oh, with hydrogen peroxide too

Or else no lines or bands

    Will ever show through.

    Secrets revealed, yes, there are

But a map to a lake isle's treasure?

    Never so far.

(Composed on a rather dull and frustrating afternoon in the lab. Photograph is of Lochleven in the Western Highlands)
