  • I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

    Robert Frost

    The roads I left behind,
    where did they lead?
It is so tempting to speculate,
    to raise questions,
to remember how it was then,
as opposed to how it is now,
and try to project myself back,
    back, back in time,
    when everything
was so different than it is
    at this reflecting moment.

    The roads I left behind
    are interesting to me now
only in the way a fossil imprint
of a fern leaf is interesting –
    I ponder not so much
the reality of a leaf that once was,
as the image of that leaf,
and I address the image itself,
on its own terms, as memory.

    Just so with that series
    of negative spaces
    where all of my roads
    left behind curl off
    into parallel realities
    I will never enter,
    and never ever experience.

    The negative spaces
provoke me into a more critical,
and, it is to be hoped,
    objective viewing
    of my present circumstances.

Right now is all I’ve got.

No, they are not without interest,
    those roads, whoever they are,
and wherever they may be now.
    Those other lives, forever lost.
