  • September looks back on the withering flowers
    the warm nights
    the endless light

    She swings her dust broom
and gathers up the leaves in the folds of her dress

Preparing to leave her summer dwelling
she covers the garden with frost-white sheets at nighttime
stopping for a while beneath the old apple tree
    remembering August

Oh, how she misses him now
    that he’s gone
his kisses so sweet, his embrace so tender

September looks back at the dried up berries
    The fallen apples
    The yellowing grass

    She smooths her dress
recalling his warm hands around her waist

But here’s October, lingering in the shadows
    laughing at her melancholy
He says there’s still time to dance
amidst the falling leaves and stars

He’s so crisp and colourful, that one
    and she forgets her obligations
engaging in a dance across the moonlit grass

September looks back at the summer picnics
    The nightswimming
    The skinny-dipping

    She’s waltzing carelessly,
laughing exultantly at her autumnal cavalier

But there, across the garden, clad in clouds
with rain dripping from his eyes
    awaits her dark, sincere fiance
    who bears the name November

Sweet September must collect her thoughts and muster courage
    to endure the coming winter,
    and let August go
