  • I have a dear friend on the left coast (California) who is battling Stage 4 cancer. I haven’t heard from him for awhile – well, I haven’t heard from his wife. She usually sends out e-mail updates to some of us periodically, letting us know how the battle is going. He was conserving his energy for the fight, so she was keeping us informed. They are very religious – some of the most devout people I know - and have really embraced their faith through this process. I think this has helped them a great deal.

The other day, I had one of those weird dreams. I was driving a car with 3 passengers, and we were climbing a very long, steep hill. About halfway up the hill, which kept getting steeper and higher as we went, the car started to slow down. I kept pushing the pedal further and further until it was jammed to the floor, and the car kept going slower, and slower, until it finally came to a stop, right as we were practically going straight up. It just couldn’t overcome the impossibly steep grade of the hill - we just sat there for a pregnant moment, teetering on the brink, it felt like. I glanced in the rear view mirror, and it was a hell of a long way back down that hill. We began to roll backwards, slowly at first, but our speed picked up as we rolled back down the hill. It was a well-know fact that the brakes would not work in this scenario. I was shitting bricks. Then, my utter fear suddenly turned into wild thrill, as we went faster and faster, just flying down that hill. We all started waving our arms about and screaming, like you do on a roller-coaster. As we reached the bottom and kept going, up the hill on the other side, the road turned into an escalator, and carried us right up the hill. We got off the escalator at the summit.

There was no going back, since the escalator was still running in our direction, so we began to walk down a trail that went off in the other direction. There were some tables with interesting model houses on them, to our right. There was some kind of a fair or festival going on down in front of us, over across the way. To get there, you had to cross over a big gully. My friend’s wife Patsy was walking behind me. She climbed up onto my back and held on as I jumped over the gully to the other side. We made it,safely, although I almost lost my balance and came close to falling backwards into the gully. But, I straightened up, she got down off my back, and then I woke up.

It had the feeling of being one of “those” dreams that I’ve had a few times in my life. I really hoped that it didn’t mean something bad had happened to Bob. I sent an e-mail to see what’s going on, lately. Bob wrote back to say that he’s on the mend after some heavy duty treatments. His weight is coming back, he’s on a great diet they found, and his energy is slowly returning. He sounded really good.

I was so relieved that it wasn’t what I feared it was. Turns out, it was just a dream. I’ve been having a lot of them, lately.
