  • This story refers to events described in my Cowbird entry on the 9th of June 2012.
After a scam, I lost £1400 + by the courtesy of Western Union. Although Western Union did not set out to defraud me, I reckon that they were derelict in the execution of their agency; they delivered the money I had entrusted to them to be delivered to A, to a third party B (the fraudster). So I decided that I would not rest until I got ALL my money back.

I achieved this rare feat by a combination of actions. I told them that Randolph Scott who had fought swamps, avalanches, Red Indians, renegades in order to set up their venerable institution would turn in his grave if he knew how many people had been left high and dry by their negligence. I will fight you on the beaches, I wrote to them, in the Courts, on the Streets. I sent them the picture above, telling them (truthfully) that after I had carried this banner in a public Demo in Edinburgh on a Saturday (during the Gaza Blockade), the restriction on the importation of Coriander (Cilantro) was lifted on the following Monday. I explained that having the evidence that Street Demos bear fruits, I planned to carry out a series on One-Man demos highlighting their inefficiency. I informed them of my airing the story on Cowbird; I got my Member of Parliament Mr Alastair Darling who used to be Chancellor of the Exchequer in the last government to write to them. I also enlisted the help of the Financial Ombudsman, and to cap it all, I wrote to WE, an official letter inn which I "gave them due notice that I am taking you to the Small Claims Court unless a satisfactory outcome was arrived at". Initially they denied liability, but my persistence finally bore fruit. They began by offering me a smaller sum which I declined, but have since agreed to a full refund plus expenses.
I understand that a very large number of people have been victim of scams via the Western Union, but in the case when money was delivered to the wrong person, redress is possible.
