  • At midnight we make fire to burn the old year away and for that we need a big fire. The members of Kiwanis in Ólafsfjörður where preparing the fire with oil so it will burn tonight. Maybe it will snow or rain but the fire will burn.

"How much oil does it take" I asked Gunnar Reynir who was filling bucket after bucket of oil. "Around 500 liters (132 gallons)" he said. But stated that it was a small fire compared to what had been some years ago when they sometimes burned old boats. "Then we had to put 1000 liters". The men carried each bucket to the wood and splashed the oil. They had fun;-)

Jón who is the chairman of the Kiwanis observed that the oil would spread to all parts and took care of the top reaching down for yet another bucket.

"We are 10 members in the Kiwanis now" Gunnar Reynir said "but some are old and can't help out any longer" he continued never stopping his work filling bucket after bucket.

Tonight at 20:00 we will have our fire and traditions live on. Thanks to the men who took time to prepare the fire.
