  • We're going on four weeks without a fridge. Only four years old, our Kenmore lost its seal and ruined the compressor. Is it a coincidence it conked on the hottest day of the year? "Unrepairable" says the Sears repairman. Where does an old fridge go? Does it become scrap metal? Molten? If we lived in Havana I bet it would get repaired.

Linda spends two hours on the phone with four different people in four different lands ordering a new one under the existing five-year warranty. That model is available but only if we get out our credit card. The automated phone scripts drive us crazy. If you are monitoring these calls why do we repeat our phone number, address, and drama so many times? I melt down. We are informed new refrigerators come with one-year warranties. It's absurd. The icebox before this one lasted for 27 years. Our refrigerator magnets are lonely waiting for stainless to hug.

Down the road our off-grid friends use block ice that lasts four days in a cooler when they need to store perishables. 38 degrees is hard to maintain without electric assist. Only 17% of the world's population has a refrigerator. The fortunate have generous neighbors with extra space in their SubZero.

18.5 cubic feet of cool on delivery for Wednesday. We wait for Godot.
