  • In the book: Ethique et Infini of Emmanuel Lévinas I read the following quotation by Dostoyevsky :
"Nous sommes tous responsables de tout et de tous devant tous, et moi plus que tous les autres.".

I went on the Web to find a translation of it in English. I was immediately struck by the variety of the translations. Not style, but where some people had simply taken off part of the text.
Someone had removed the following: "but I am more responsible than all the others.". Enormous slashing.
The translation below also cuts one of the elements.
"We are all responsible for everyone else—but I am more responsible than all the others."
    — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

But I am not here to talk about translation, although it is a fascinating subject [How about translating poetry?], I am here to ask the question, having gone through the last 10 years, can anyone imagine any of our leaders, CEOs, sports figures able to write that quotation about responsibilty? Could I write it myself?
