  • Psalm Forty Six

God is our protector, God is our strength,
God stands with us, He watches us, He knows our needs.
We have nothing to fear, for God is our Lord,
If the earth suddenly parts beneath us,
if mountains suddenly are thrown into the sea,
though the seas become wild and savage,
    though mountains become volcanoes,
God will protect us. Think about this.

For there is a river of faith, its streams
please our Lord. It flows throughout the kingdom of heaven,
it is the lifeblood of the temples and the tabernacles,
And God is in the midst of our faith,
our faith will not be moved,
    God will uphold our faith,
God will show us He is God.
    Unbelievers have raged against us,
    but their kingdoms are gone,
    God spoke his righteousness,
and they have vanished from the face of the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our God.
    Think about this.

Look around you, behold what has happened to the unbelievers,
for God has devastated their lands,
    He has annihilated their armies,
    He has destroyed their weapons,
He has burned their chariots and left them with nothing.

Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be known and praised by the unbelievers.
The world will know that I am your God, that I am God.

The Lord of Hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our God.
    Think about this.

"Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, Verily I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM." - John 8:57-58 [KJV]

When Moses went up to the burning bush, he asked God his name. The answer was "I AM". The implications are staggering.

We stage our language in tenses as a contextualization of time, a way to give references to others so they know when things have happened, are happening, or will happen. Past, Present, and Future. I was married on....., I am working at...., I will travel to..... These are all necessary concepts for us to grasp, for we are temporal beings. We are born, we live, we die.

God has no such restriction. By claiming the name I AM, He is telling us he is beyond this temporal plane of existence. Jesus is not simply telling the Jews he was alive when Abraham was alive. Jesus is saying He is God.

David is acknowledging God is eternal, and His love for the Jews will remain faithful throughout eternity, so long as they remain faithful. His prayer of praise is a reminder to the congregation that God is eternal in his presence and His promises. His prayer is a declaration of God's promises.

Faith is a daily commitment, a daily discipline that has to pervade every aspect of your life. The way you talk to others, the way you make your decisions, the way you raise your family.

Its not an easy walk. We all have things happen in our lives that lead us to question our faith. But we do not have to face these things alone. We have the Holy Spirit, the indwelling God, to help us through these times, if we remember to listen to Him.

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth within you?" - 1 Corinthians 3:16 [KJV]

If you truly believe, you are never alone.
