  • -Elijah Allen and Trey Woods
(position: quarterback and wide receiver, age: 15; position: cornerback and kick return, age: 15)

Elijah: We thought it would just be a regular hurricane where the storm would come in, and it would flood a little bit, but that nothing really big would happen. We didn’t think we were going to live in Texas. We thought we were just going for a visit. We weren’t thinking, oh we might never come back.

I came up to Texas from New Orleans, LA in 2005. Hurricane Katrina sent me up here. We came to stay with my uncle in Denton, TX. I was going to the third grade that fall at Pecan Creek Elementary School. I saw Trey in the hallway.

Trey: And, I was going to the bathroom, and I was just like, wow, who’s this kid?

Elijah: And I was getting a tour around the school.

Trey: Yeah, and we made eye contact, and I was just like, huh, okay. I went to the bathroom, I came back, I went into class, and what do you know? Trey we have a new student! I was like, who? What do you know, it was Elijah! From then on we started talking. We were just friends from the get-go.

Elijah: We have a lot of things in common. We started hanging out together, ended up going to the same middle-school and playing the same sports. We basically became like brothers.

Trey: The funny thing is that Elijah, now, he was like, ‘Man, in New Orleans, I was not about to play no football, no I was not.’ That’s what he said to me. And I was like, ‘Why not?’ And he said, ‘I was scared. I was scared to get hit. I just stuck to the baseball, the bat and the ball, and that was me. That was me.’ But in Denton, Elijah joined the DYFL league. I asked him, ‘What made you start playing football?’ Elijah said, ‘Well, you know the first practice I was nervous, but it was either hit or be hit, and I’m not about to get knocked out, so I better hit somebody.’ So Elijah hit someone, and afterwards he was like, ‘Oh that felt kind of good.’ From then on Elijah just fell in love with football.

Elijah: I don't like when people tell me things like only two out of 100 people make it to the NFL. I'm like, well I guess that will be me and Trey.
