  • I had wished Nobel Peace Laureate Wangari Maathai would be the first person we would interview for the documentary and she agreed in a letter delivered on my birthday in August. It was against all odds, I´d been told, and I was in tears in the middle of Laugavegur when I received the news. To me, Maathai is about our roots on this planet, our common ecosystem, memory, psyche, existence and being. Then she passed away in September and we never got to meet her. It took me a while to realise what she meant to me in the context of my being and the ways in which I dream. The owl and santa claus are having a conversation on my window shelve and it only takes me seconds to realise my place between the two of them. The owl is a 360 degrees being and this particular santa claus who's name is Askasleikir is one of thirteen santa clauses, or 'jule lads', that visit Icelandic homes in December each year. There are numerous adventures and stories I know about him but there is none about the owl I can remember at the moment. And yet I feel I know what she is all about. There is nothing she needs to explain to me. She has my full attention and respect. All year round. Tonight, towards the end of this year, the owl reminds me of Maathai and together they remind me of the magic in life. The magic we can create and how magic can take us places. In the year 2012.
