  • Toby watched the horse. The horse watched Toby. At 8 years old, with a grey face and only three legs, this dog posed no danger. Quietly he lied by the leafless tree and watched. The horse, young and spirited, spent the morning running full out across the field. She bucked wildly into the wind. Why she came to a stop to watch an old Golden Retriever was curious to me. I watched the two animals watching each other for a long while. At first, nervously, concerned that Toby may decide to go after the horse, and being outmatched, get hurt. But I saw them come to a wordless agreement to coexist in peace. This was the first morning in our new house. It was a good beginning.
