  • Jeanne Dhoorah is 104-years-old. I spent Christmas with her and her family in Mauritius. It may be reasonably expected that Jeanne requires significant support but her independence is astonishing. Whilst she no longer cooks she walks freely, speaks clearly, is a finicky inquirer, and enjoys a detailed knowledge of all that happens in the lives around her. We spoke of a past Mauritius, complete with make-shift huts for shelter and the absence of electricity and radio. I was in-part reminded of our conversation as I travelled the South-west coast. I ate venison in the Chamarel mountains and before the sun found Le Morne.
