  • We walked down to the World Trade Center site. Looking at the new buildings going up and all tourists milling around taking millions of pictures, I was overcome by a supreme sense of hope. Standing there looking up at the blue sky, and the magnificent new building in front of me, I was struck by a series of wonderful and amazing thoughts.

Like this: There is always the chance for re-building. There is no such thing as defeat until you decide you are defeated.

And also this: change is inevitable. We cannot base our realities on the past. The past is dead and gone. All there is is the very bright future, and always the chance to begin anew, no matter what the level of destruction may have been.

Perhaps, most poignant was this: the life I want is indeed out there. But it is not one giant, beautiful, pre-assembled work of art waiting for me to simply unwrap it. It is lying around out there, in bits and pieces. Some pieces far scattered, some pieces in need of repair. It is up to me to gather those pieces, fix the broken ones, and put it together myself.

We spend so much time in our own heads, dreaming up reasons why we cannot. Maybe it’s time to put one foot in front of the other with the pure conviction that we can.
