  • Eins zwei drei vier fünf sechs sieben acht...

I've always loved numbers. Just the numbers themselves. I'm not particularly gifted at mathematics. When I (for reasons that seem most unclear today) took an evening class in matrix mathematics through the Open University many years ago, I'm sure I did it just because I liked the look of the tables. Actually manipulating them was a much lesser pleasure.

One, two, three, four. Chewing out a rhythm on my bubble gum...

Was a coincidence that I fell in love with punk rock because every song seemed to begin with a belted out series of numbers?

One, two, three, four. I wonder what we'll play for you tonight...

When Kraftwerk ended that wild decade with the song "Numbers", it seemed the perfect coda.

Eins zwei drei vier fünf sechs sieben acht...

    One two

    Un deux trois

I listened to this over and over again, sometimes while I was watching a computer load or update a program. In those days of double digit megahertz, that took a long time. I would watch, mesmerized, as the progress bar would accumulate 23%, 24%, 25%.... Does anyone else get pleasure watching a progress bar? I still do. Sometimes it's more fun than the program I load. Disk fragmentations, those old DOS displays that filled the screen with lines and lines of blocks and could take hours to run - I could barely tear myself away.

    Fifty five

Well, that's one to ponder. It's my age and my birthday is today.

    Six

I am not a number, I am a free man!

That's a good place to stop, I think.

Eins zwei drei vier fünf sechs sieben acht...

    If I can.
