  • John is a retired architect, native Englishman and longtime resident of New York City, Greenwich Village to be exact. He and his now departed wife bought the house in which he currently resides back in the 70's. It was built in the 1820's and has had many functions throughout its history. A brewery and horse stables to name a few. The floor creaks every step of the way in the three story house and the walls and shelves are covered with his wife's paintings, books, photographs and sentimental scraps as well as original items that have been with the house since its beginning.

He gave us a tour of the space and then gave us a spoken tour of life and New York as he has known it. There was this unshakable feeling that he belonged to another time, another New York. One whose friends and neighbors and wives were long gone and only found in the occasional memory or dust covered artifact.

As we listened you could hear the children at a nearby school playing on the playground, horns honking and even louder than that, this sort of silence. Maybe it was the sound of a simpler life, a more experienced human beings quiet wisdom or maybe the emptiness where his old life once was. It was heavy and it implied our approaching frailty and the value of relationships above all else.

I know what i have to do now.
