  • In a semi mind warped-ness, I’m sitting and watching all the characters unfolds from inside the OLYMPIA CAFÉ. It reminds me about the BACKSTAGE Café back in Amsterdam … bustling with the buzz of the regulars only minutes after the doors open. The table in front of me sports an elderly man, sailor-ish … he’s busy reading a book on boat building dynamics (I guess - from the illustrations). To the sailor’s right is a Blondie couple - possibly from out of town, but most certainly South-Africans. He wears pearl CROCS, she chose flat sandals with somewhat unkempt feet, early cracked heals (bit like mine). A grey-haired lady with fun outfit just walked in - breakfast by herself (like me). Another sand-colour-CROCS-wearing-male sits in the midsection hiding away from the already cheeky sunshine pouring in through the massive glass front; he’s reading the newspaper attentively. I wonder to myself . . . could he be suitable for me? First kid enters OLYMPIA (07:21 my watch) 07:27 OLYMPIA clock.

Nobody asks whether I would like to order ... Bob Marley sings "no women, no cry"! My waiter sports some hobbit-like facial hairs, lovely voice, piercing eyes, perhaps late 20’s / early 30’s ... what’s his name? Barefoot cyclist pays for 2 coffees & 2 cinnamon sticks and leaves with wife and kids! Bachelor-boy still has his nose stuck into the horrid news for today – more crime, more corruption & here we get to enjoy an early morning cuppa in a sunny OLYMPIA just 300m from where KALKBAY’S waves are colliding with the shore! The baker appears for a snip-second from the back ... scrawny but toned & muscled in all the right places ... "I shot the sheriff" Bob Marley moans forth! The baker features ex-jailed properties, cold face covered in crew beard & otherwise short-ish shipwrecked hair. Perhaps the moment was a bit short to accurately see his expression? Bachelor-boy gets up, pays with a R50 note & walks out of my life . . . while beverage girl jokes behind the counter saying "I also want a baby" – "don’t we all lady?" I think.

Sailor-man leaves, LEVY’S 32 pulled up a bit too high, true older-men style . . . the elderly, Grey-haired lady leaps to his table seconds after his departure – she then continues to persistently working on a puzzle, while peeping @ the weather predictions on the same page! My Brie & tomato omelette arrived a while ago . . . absolutely heavenly!

Pregnant blonde shops for croissants – TAKE AWAY, she looks about 7.5 months ... I’m dreaming of my future children, hoping they would be colourful, creative bundles of joy – pondering motherhood and what it would be like? Another lice infested baby bird chirps from the rooftop . . . "and the beat goes on, lalilalidi, ladidadida!" Pink-shirt-professional fills many paper bags with pastries – TAKE AWAY!

KALKBAY awakens in OLYMPIA from 7am & then the rest of the business owners finally catch on at 09h00 (some even slow-down their business-sense to 10h00). It must explain why OLYMPIA attracts the Egg Yoke each morning and the droopy Egg White is all that remains for the "late-beginners"!

Tall hippie-like man moved from the counter to the bachelor’s table (he knows the hobbit it appears) ... white cotton pants & long straight hair pulled back in a pony – all looks fresh & cool . . . perhaps a bit too Zen.

Pentel Hybrid roller pen almost out of ink – perhaps I’ll mail this to OLYMPIA CAFÉ, address it to the hobbit AS IS – no editing or correcting my wacky spelling!

I might come back for round 2 at 09h45, coffee with my Sangoma friend! More than half the tables already turned over twice and the OLYMPIA clock only raced to 08h17 . . . impressing me, is the smooth calm, happy flow here.

2 old girlfriends are catching up on my right, guess I might look like the blue-dress-dark-haired-ankle-chained lady in my 40’s. Hmmm ... so many mysteries & coffee dates until I trespass into the 40-something decade!

Some paintings and prints hang on the wall behind me – Artist Rodger Shagam. Perhaps I’ll return to rescue the "PENSIONER" from the wall . . . an image of an old man with sagging face, inscription reading "Will you still love me, will you still feed me?"
