  • “This is very healthy, you know. Floating in water,” Dave says. He’s looking at me as he floats on his back in the water at Lee Street Beach, small waves gently pushing his body up and down, first at the feet and then the shoulders. He is teeter tottering on the water top, looking like a serious little kid handing over some very important information.

I spring face first into the water, doing yet another front summersault. If I do the summersault fast enough I lose my stomach for just a second like on a roller coaster. Losing my stomach makes me come up for air fast, smiling and clenching my gut.

I respond, “Living two blocks away from this is what’s healthy. If we lived ten miles away, we’d never see the beach. We can walk here. That is a healthy lifestyle choice.”

Before he can reply I plunge down into the water and skim along the sandy bottom of the lake with my stomach. It is quiet under water, the only sound is the faint ticking of a boat propeller off in the distance.

As I come up for air I see an orange, full moon rising over the Eastern horizon of the lake. We swim until the moon is up above the clouds and is casting a small line of orange along the water.

“It’s healthy to make time to watch a moonrise,” I say as we are drying off on the beach. Dave leans in and kisses me and says, “I love you.”
