  • I have acquired a friend a world away.

A world away on the globe we live on, and a world away socially, economically, governmentaly, and so many other worlds of difference I can't even count, let alone imagine.

He lives in Hungary. His online alias is altrev. I don't know his name.

We have never met, we communicate through tumblr online. I haven't the slightest idea what he even looks like. He hasn't posted any self portraits, but he does communicate his life in Hungary, and I learn.

He's learning too. He is a budding photographer. He is learning digital processing. He tells me that he is 58 years old, but I see in him the enthusiasm of a teenager in his pursuit of knowledge in this field.

Today he posted one of his own art oriented photographs. It's easy to see that he is experimenting with the knowledge he's gaining in the digital processing craft, but he shows promise in this, and a gift for addressing commonalities of all peoples with his subject matter.

His first posting of his own work was of a dead bird... a still life, with foliage as a backdrop. The processing was excessive and rudimentary, but his creativity was evident. He was willing to experiment, take risks, be misunderstood, be wrong, make mistakes... and learn, to share his work anyway... and learn, to risk criticism... and learn.
His caption was "the secret !". A universally understandable subject that all humans, regardless of country, race, religion, class, or sex have to come to terms with at sometime. He intimates that there is a secret to death, that few will hear, listen to if they do hear, or likely ever understand.

I posted, dedicated to him; the photograph above, with the caption/description:

    (For altrev:)
"Something I did earlier this year...
I believe that death is natural, and beautiful in it’s own way. Something we all will someday experience.
If we accept the beauty of it, we will no longer fear it. We will no longer fear living either, we will enjoy our lives even more for the understanding of our destination, and look forward to each day as if it were our only one.
No past, no future... just the here and now."

    - I'm not perfect, nor do I know it all, and if I ever become so learned, and so correct, I hope I am already deceased. I do not want to forget the joy of learning, I enjoy life more when I learn. I get bored when I cannot learn.

I want to always have new friends like altrev, to remind me of this.
