  • Lance Armstrong would have been proud of me. But I am not ready to take on the Tour de France.

I bought a bicycle yesterday. I got it from a second hand store for 30 bucks. It was in poor condition. I spent 4 hours just cleaning it. It had been well used... and abused. Scratches, scraps and nicks marred the yellow paint. Grease and grime covered the chrome. Rust was settling in.

I took it to the Riverwalk, a bike path along the Susquehanna River. The air was fresh and clear. The sun peeked out intermittently through the partly cloudy sky. A nice breeze made it a perfect day for bike riding.

It’s a ten speed Huffy. I guestimate that its about 35 years old.

The last time I rode a bike in earnest was about 45 years ago. We were made for each other. Both of us are in need of a little TLC, Tender Loving Care.

The mostly flat 2.3 mile circuit is just what the doctor ordered. Literally.

Well, I would talk longer but I gotta’ go. I am going to run a nice soothing bath and fill the apartment with mellow jazz.

A big thanks to Morgan Rogers, an older teen that taught me how to ride a bike. He’s been dead many years now. The appreciation never dies. Thanks Morgan for sharing some time with a lonely fatherless kid.

Who knows? Maybe next week I’ll buy a helmet and a pair of Speedos...

    Watch out Lance.
