  • Double Vision Woman once dreamed of her 7 brothers.

In this dream, the Great Spirit and grandmothers of the past taught her a style of doing really beautiful artwork with porcupine quills, which had never been done before. In her dream she learned how to make costumes, regalia for the warriors and maidens, and baby bonnets.

When she woke she told her folks and grandparents about her dream of making gifts for her seven brothers, making them moccassins, leggings and war shirts. In real life, she had no brothers or sisters. Her parents were confused. Double Vision Woman pointed to the East and said "they're over there". There were clouds, and even a rainbow in the East where she pointed. "Soon I will join them, my seven brothers."

She set out to make gifts for her brothers: seven moccassins, seven war shirts, and seven leggings.

All around people admired her quill work and asked where she learned to do this beautiful art. She told them it was the grandmothers of the Spirit World who had taught her.

The day came when finally she got up and announced she was finished and she set off to find her brothers. She packed all of her gifts for them, and even her little do. She walked towards the East, and the farther she went the cloudier and foggier it got.

Eventually as Double Vision Woman walked she found a clearing. In the clearing there was a teepee and she knew she'd find her brothers there. Outside there were seven buffalo robes where seven men would sit. She knocked on the door and opened it to find seven sleeping spots and seven bows and arrows hanging around.

When she walked out of the lodge she saw her seven brothers coming towards her, running, and they were being chased by the Buffalo Nation. The brothers had been out hunting but were now being chased. The youngest brother had wakan (sacred) arrows, and they grabbed them as well as all the beautiful garments their sister had made. And with her and these gifts they ran and climbed a tree to escape the Buffalo Nation.

As they climbed, the youngest brother shot his wakan arrows at the buffalo and the tree began to grow. They rose higher and higher as the buffalo rammed the tree, shaking it. The tree carried them high up until they reached the clouds, where they jumped off. Finally Double Vision Woman could giver her seven brothers their quill work gifts, which they saw as very beautiful.

Then they all became part of the universe, and are people in the stars.
