  • "Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."
    -Christopher Nolan

"Chris doesn't know the guy's going to use live ammo, right?"

"He wasn't a happy camper but signed off thinking it would be a purely pyrotechnic publicity stunt."

"So why do we need the real stuff?"

"What, you want Nerf balls? Think about it. The press would shout "Studio stunt!" around the globe if he used blanks or even rubber bullets. We would be sued up the ass. It has to look totally spontaneous and deranged."

"The kid thinks the ammo's not live, right?"

"Yeah. They profiled him and synched with his fantasies. That and the drugs will turn him into an action figure for about an hour. He's been prepped by one of the best coaches in the biz and thinks he's making a statement. He knows there will be some fallout, but only like trampling and heart attacks, not gunshot wounds."

"Sounds good, but once again, Fred, why little Aurora? Wouldn't a real city be a better venue?"

"A, the kid lives there. We didn't want any travel arrangements. B, you can't pull off a caper like this in a town with a large police force. There's too much that could go wrong."

"What's the chance it will scare people so much they will stay away this weekend?"

"All the focus groups indicated that a shooting incident would draw more viewers than it turns off. A different crowd in some respects, but definitely a bigger one."

"What about the money for the kid? Can it be traced back?"

"Offshored three times. So gentlemen, what's not to like?"

"Only the fact that it will be the biggest movie marketing coup in history that nobody will never know about."

    "I can live with that."

    "Me too."
