  • the three of us do this dance,
    mother, father, son. . .
all adults living under the same roof.
him coming home to us with reverent determination.

almost seven months into his recovery now,
i have learned to stay in the background,
letting him make his own choices,
letting him deal with the consequences of his past actions.
i was not always so good at that,
and while i might tell others it is not my fault,
deep down i hold some of the responsibility.

so we do this dance, the three of us,
    mother, father, son. . .
each of us leaning the steps to the new music,
the music which i am finally allowing myself to listen to with hope.
