  • Yesterday during one of our many meals together we shared stories of vacations passed.

One year our family rented a cabin on the Russian River north of San Francisco. We brought an injured family pet with us, a small finch with a gouge under it’s wing that was bleeding to death and instead of bringing it to the vet, we brought it on vacation.

The cabin was like a big version of a birdcage, lots of screened-in porches set in the trees, and old wood everything.

The bird eventually died after it spent several days flapping around the bottom of its cage, streaking blood all over the funny pages and sports pages of the day.

We travelled home from that vacation with an empty birdcage.
