  • Growing up my Grandma used to be a housekeeper/nanny for a couple different families. One family who lived near Parkridge Elementary had a pool, and on summer days we would go over with my Grandma and we would play all day in the pool like only kids can, not caring about the 100f desert sun or the smog and chlorine burning our lungs. Just kids being kids.

I don’t remember the names of the kids she watched, but they and my brothers were jumping about in and around the pool with the radio blasting. It must have been around 1977, because from research that is the year “Rich Girl” by Hall and Oates came out. So that would probably make me ten. Anyway we were jumping around playing, and the song came on and ooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhh it said bitch! The song said bitch! There it goes again! Of course my big brother and I got in an argument, I forget who was on what side of the issue. It said rich girl! No, bitch girl! Listen! Rich girl! No listen! Bitch girl! Many years later I realized we were both right.

Anyway, I’m sitting in a café right now, grading papers in front of big windows that frame the ebbing of another perfect San Diego summer day, and Rich Girl plays in my rotation. (Granted, a more hipster version.) And a memory of a happy childhood day came to mind. Now back to grading papers on Mein Kampf.
