  • In thirty-seven years,
    which is exactly
    thirteen thousand
    six-hundred & eighty-seven
    days on the planet,
I've done the dishes at least
    five thousand times
    hung laundry every fourth day
    made the bed every other.

I've been four continents doing it
    figure Asia & Australia
have got to be the same.

    Beneath nine hundred ceilings
    forever the same stars
    always dreaming alike.
I got lost in love three times deeply
before getting married to peace of mind
    must've known twelve dozen women
some kind, some not, some fine.
    Had two cars that crashed
    seven dogs dog-gone, couple
    horses dangerous to ride.

    Raised-trained in southern Ontario
I was born again in Québec, Québec.
    Teacher, tailor, soldier, sailor
hauled sixteen suitcases wherever I went
    learning to live from two
learned four languages not counting music
    the only one that counts.

    Irish-German on my father’s side
English-Dutch on the side of my mum
I left a first French wife overwhelmed
by the gods, on a small Greek island
near Crete. Years later in Barcelona
I got married again without gods
in a courthouse by the same sea
    next to the Ciutadella
    the day of the Bastille.

In 1992, it's good to know
    all this adversity's
    a natural perversity
    five billion souls
    getting older everyday
a handful of family or some friends
    still make it all worthwhile.
