  • I passed under a bridge yesterday, driving in my car. A flock of blackbirds flew right beside my window, flying into a storm.

I stopped, parked, got out of my car, in my silly pink shirt, wet from the heaving rain, chasing blackbirds under a bridge along its new migratory path. These birds had never passed this way before.

My body was held in wonder to the sight before me... such beauty, but no one seemed to notice. The traffic on the interstate above my head. The thud, boom, boom, the thud of tires hitting expansion joints. Rubber moving on asphalt. The water pouring down sheets from the sky. Cars still moving past me while I stood so still under the bridge.

Across the street, a mere boy, in a beat up blue car of a thing, bumper stickers everywhere, an ancient bike rack permanently rusted to the roof, had pulled over, got out, and began taking pictures of the same amazing flock of blackbirds flying under this bridge. Long hair, first beard. Kid held out his phone, just like me. A photo was what we both wanted.

From a distance our eyes met, we held the gaze while rain passed between us. A wry smile drew itself from the corner of our mouths, simultaneously. We had caught each other, exposing our hunger for beauty found in the cracks and crevices of this life.

He got in his car, drove away. I got in mine and did the same.
