  • Life is like this: sometimes sun,
    sometimes rain.

    Fijian Proverb

    even after sunset

    the tropical heat and humidity

    are oppressive.

I take a walk on the beach

    hoping to cool off

    and find this young boy

    picking up shells

    he looks up at me

    smiles a wide smile

    and waves a shy hello

    I smile and wave back

    we do not speak

    but in that moment

    there is a happiness

    a kind of communion

    a recognition, a knowing

    that we are here together

in this time, in this life,

    in all this fragrant beauty,

    two souls, by the sea,

    two humans

    being.
