  • Forever leading down
we followed the huge rock faces
from whose heights the waters fell & pounded
snaking a destiny between steep stone walls

It was full of sound the canyon
    myriad choirs of water-nymph voices
    tumbling cascades the gurgling pools
rushing then swirling in ecstasy of flow

From dry stone to dry stone like children
we hop-scotched the spine of the river
& the flat rocks could burn our feet

Near the tall falls you showed me where to dive
the narrow path to the grotto ledge
    For an uncertain moment
we stood staring into the foam
    then sprang together
    for the excited blackness below
